Steps to Ensure Proper Furnace Performance

A furnace inspection is done to assess the condition of a residential or industrial furnace.

The prime purpose for it is to identify any damages. Repairs and maintenance are done so that the furnace can run efficiently and does not become a safety hazard. A maintenance check can ensure if there is any wear or tear in your furnace.

This can be done by a technician or yourself. Necessary cleaning, repairs can be done either yourself or by HVAC specialists. Here is a checklist you should go through whenever you do your annual/bi-annual furnace maintenance.

1.Replace Air Filter

It is recommended that you change your filters every 3 or 4 months.

2.Clean flame sensor and burners

The burners and flame sensors are to be cleaned out regularly, so they work efficiently and do not consume more energy than usual.

3.Inspect all wire connections and safety control

Make sure any exposed outlets and broken wires are immediately attended to. Replace old and broken wires with newer ones to prevent any short circuits.

4.Look thoroughly in the system for any collected debris

All the accumulated dust and particles should be cleaned out. This can result in blockages and eventually reduce the lifespan of your furnace system.

4.Clean out the fuel and check for any leakages

If you own a gas or oil furnace, then you must clean out your fuel tank. Also, make sure that there are no cracks or holes that may result in leakage of fuel. It is crucial because a leak in the fuel tank will increase your overall expenditure on fuel bought and is a fire hazard due to its highly flammable nature.

5.Look out for air leaks.

A leak can be hazardous to health as there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in gas and oil-fueled furnace systems. Sealing air leaks is simple and can be done with a caulking gun. Whether hazardous or not, any air leaks can result in a 10% in your heating bills.

6.Inspect the airways and ductwork

Make sure that there is no debris accumulated there. Dusty air registers can lead to reduced airflow. This decreases the overall output of your furnace system.

7.Lubricate all the moving parts

Make sure that you oil the fans, hinges and are lubricated. This will prevent resistance and any unnecessary noise.

8.Check your smoke detectors.

You must check the batteries on your smoke detectors. In case your furnace breaks down, or there is smoke coming out of it, then your smoke detectors will alert you just in time.

9.Test your detectors every six months

It is ample that you install and do regular controlled tests on your detectors. These detectors will notify you of any poisonous gases that are leaking out of the furnace.

It is crucial that after every maintenance check, you log your observations. It will be easier to keep track of repairs over time. It is an efficient method of tracking your furnace's efficiency.

While self-maintenance is cost-effective, it is essential to remember that a well-trained HVAC technician will be better able to assess your furnace system's capabilities.
